2-3 League Rules

League-specific rules

  • The game will be four (4) quarters with six (6) minutes per quarter. Running clock except free throws, injuries and timeouts. 
  • Goal height is 9’  
  • The ball size is 28.5” 
  • Overtime- 1st OT- 2 minutes. 2nd OT- first point wins. No overtime during regular season.
  • Halftime will be five (5) minutes  

PLAYING TIME REQUIREMENTS

  • Each player must play one full quarter in each half of the game. 
  • Exception to the rule: If the on-court official deems a player should be removed from the game due to injury, illness or equipment failure, which in the official’s judgement might jeopardize the safety or wellbeing of said player. 
  • Equal playing time is the goal

Intentional and Technical Fouls

  • Will be called the same as high school games 
  • Taunting is a technical foul 
  • Ball handling violations (travel and double dribble) will be called and will be called more strictly as the season progresses. 

 

DEFENSE

  • Players cannot play defense until the offense crosses the 3 point line: or 5 seconds; whichever happens first.  
  • When the defense takes possession of the ball the offense must return to the defensive end of the court.  
  • Color matching wristbands will be worn, and defender must only guard the same color. 
  • Man-to-man defense only.  
  • Help defense is allowed only if a defender is beat but must return to their man after help. 
  • Help defense only inside the free throw lane 
  • NO double teams. A technical foul may be assessed for continued double teams at the discretion of the referee.  
  • No full court press at any point in the game. 

FREE THROWS

  • The free throw line will be approximately 3 feet closer than the regulation free throw line. (12ft)   
  • The shooter must line up behind the designated line, but if the player’s shot momentum takes them across this line, NO violation has occurred, unless in the official’s judgement the shooter is following their shot prior to the ball hitting the rim.  
  • Lane violations will follow HS rules.  
  • Free throws will be on shooting fouls only.  

TIME OUTS

  • Each team will be allowed two (2) time outs per half. The time outs must be taken in their respective halves, or they will be lost. One (1) timeout will be provided/allowed during an overtime period. Timeouts will be one (1) minute in length.  

VISITORS AND HOME

  • Visitors/Home team will be based on the set schedule. Visitors will be responsible for the time clock and scoreboard. Home will be responsible for the score book. Please use adults for these responsibilities.  

HIGH-SCORER RULE

A maximum of sixteen (16) points per player will be allowed. The high scorer will be allowed to continue to play; however, after sixteen (16) points made by high scorer will NOT count. If the high scorer does score a basket the points will NOT be counted, and the opposing team will get the ball.
